Chavenage bat box
Made using FSC-certified timber, Wildlife World's Chavenage bat box is a single chamber bat nesting box suitable for a variety of bat species, including pipistrelles, noctules, leisler’s, natterer’s, daubenton's and brown long-eared bats
Rated one of the best bat boxes in the UK by BBC Countryfile, the Chavenage bat box is made from solid, high-quality, durable FSC-certified timber. This ensures longevity and excellent insulation. The bat box has a narrow entrance slot at the base for access. The wood is left untreated as bats are susceptible to smell and will be deterred by any treatments applied.
Where to put a bat box
The Chavenage bat box should be positioned on a sunny aspect to provide warm conditions for its occupants; a south, south-east or south-west aspect should ensure the bat box is exposed to the sun for part of the day. Ideally, the bat nest box should be sheltered from strong winds.
The bat box should be installed at least 4 metres above the ground where safe and practical to do so (on buildings, the bat box should be placed as close to the eaves as possible). Positioning the bat box away from artificial light will help protect the bats from predation by cats and other predators.
A water source such as a garden pond will help attract the kinds of insects that bats feed on, as well as providing them with a place to drink.
